Three months later: contextless alerts, firewall false positives, and nobody to explain if an event matters for their distribution or professional services business. A real SOC is process + people + technology — in that order.
Concrete use cases to start with
For SMBs, start with concrete use cases: impossible travel login, admin account creation, mail rule changes, and anomalous exfiltration. NIST Cybersecurity Framework Detect function is the frame; you do not need six-figure Splunk. Microsoft Sentinel, Wazuh, or a regional MSSP with documented playbooks can suffice.
The question is not "do I need a SOC?" but "who responds at 2am when something fires?" If the answer is "the nephew who knows computers", you do not have a SOC — you have hope. Retain incident response or an MSSP with clear SLAs: triage time, escalation, and management communication.
Centralize logs before buying tools
Before buying tooling, centralize logs: M365, firewall, VPN, EDR endpoints. Without consolidated telemetry, any SIEM is an expensive archive. CISA offers free scanning services for eligible entities; private companies can use their guides as internal checklists.
An accessible SOC for Caribbean SMBs is hybrid: external managed monitoring + internal security owner (even part-time) who understands the business. You do not need to see a thousand alerts; you need the five that matter and what to do with each.
